Understanding Volleyball Statistics
Volleyball relies on efficiency metrics to evaluate attacking output and defensive coverage. Hitting efficiency (attack success) rewards kills while penalizing errors, while blocks per set and serve percentages measure net defense and service pressure. In volleyball, evaluating an attacker solely on kills is incomplete because it ignores hitting errors that hand points directly to the opponent. Hitting efficiency solves this by subtracting errors from kills and dividing by total attempts. A positive efficiency above .300 is strong, while a negative rate means the hitter is making more mistakes than points. Service pressure is measured by serve percentage and ace rates, while net defense is tracked by blocks per set. What is a good hitting efficiency?
In competitive volleyball, a hitting efficiency above .300 is considered excellent. Anything between .200 and .300 is solid, while a negative rate means a player is committing too many errors.
