What expected goals measures
Expected goals, written as xG, puts a number on the quality of a chance. Every shot is given a value between 0 and 1 that reflects how often a shot like it is scored. A tap in from two yards might be 0.9, while a hopeful effort from thirty yards might be 0.02. Add the value of every chance a team has, and you get its xG for the match.

How each shot gets its value
