What the result tells you
The required rate is the single best gauge of pressure in a chase. As long as it stays near the current run rate the chase is comfortable, but every quiet over pushes it up. Once it climbs much above ten an over with few wickets left, the batting side is usually behind, since sustaining that pace gets harder as the innings shortens.

Pro Tips & Advice
When the required rate is climbing, avoid panic. Identify the weakest bowler in the opposition attack and target them for boundaries. Rotate the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking even when you cannot find the boundary. Having a left-right batting combination disrupts the bowler's line and length. In T20s, keep at least one power-hitter in reserve for the death overs — sending them in too early can backfire if they get out cheaply.
